Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy, planning
The department and Bundaberg Regional Council (council) are working together to finalise the Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy which will outline the future transport initiatives in the Bundaberg region.
The Bundaberg region has a diverse and expanding economy. As the region grows, the people who live, visit and work in the region are changing their travel patterns, and their expectations of the transport system.
Currently, Bundaberg residents prefer to travel to places of employment and key activity centres by car. However, the community is beginning to transition to other modes of transport. The Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy describes 7 focus areas to support existing and future use of the transport network and council land use planning.
About the Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy
The Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy (the strategy) is jointly funded and developed by the department and council.
Development of the strategy involved seeking input from key stakeholders and the community who told us the strategy needs to:
- establish a vision for all transport modes in the Bundaberg region
- investigate how to transition Quay Street to make it a place to enjoy the riverside
- maintain access to rail services
- focus on active and public transport because it is important to locals and the development of tourism opportunities. The community needs improved walking and bike riding options especially within a 5km radius of the CBD
- provide a range of access options to the Bundaberg Hospital
- focus on flood evacuation routes
- improve freight access to support economic growth across the region.
Options to address these community and stakeholder identified needs were tested in a technical evaluation process which also identified other needs for the future transport network. This process confirmed that addressing current and predicted transport demands and opportunities will require a mix of infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions.
During the process of developing the strategy, 46 initiatives were identified in 7 focus areas to improve future transport mobility and accessibility.
