Chermside Bus Layover, Gympie Road and Murphy Road intersection, construct bus facilities

The department is improving public transport access and efficiency in Brisbane's northern corridor with the Chermside Bus Layover.

To be constructed on the land at the western side of the Gympie Road and Murphy Road intersection, the Chermside Bus Layover will support the current and future operational needs of Brisbane's public transport network by improving safety and efficiency, and minimising interaction with general traffic and pedestrian movements.

It will also provide buses with a location to park during special event shuttles, rather than on local roads.

Benefits

  • Improves safety
  • Increases capacity
  • Improves network efficiency

Key features

  • 12 layover bays, comprising 9 bays allowing for independent movements and 3 in-line bays.
  • Provision to cater for up to 25 buses during special events.
  • Bus driver facility with meal room and toilets.
  • Modifications to the signals at the Gympie Road/Murphy Road intersection to enable bus access to and from the layover.
  • Signalised pedestrian and bike rider crossing at the layover entrance.

Additional information

As part of the project, TMR will undertake works to improve the structural integrity of the old Vellnagel's Blacksmith building on Gympie Road.

The main former forge building will be retained in place under the project design, with the surrounding, newer buildings to be removed.
