Diamantina Developmental Road (Dajarra – Mount Isa), package of safety improvements
Safety on the Diamantina Developmental Road between Dajarra and Mount Isa will be improved through a package of targeted upgrades.
Works include widening and strengthening a priority 2km section of pavement, widening approaches to Waverley Creek bridge and upgrading aged drainage structures.
The package of works includes 3 separate projects that will be delivered progressively to improve safety and reliability for everyone who uses this key link. This includes remote communities who rely on the road to access goods and essential services such as health, education and employment.
The road is also an important route for the movement of cattle and freight, mining and outback tourism.

Diamantina Developmental Road (Dajarra – Mount Isa), overtaking opportunity – $2.5 million. Jointly funded on a 50:50 basis under the Road Safety Program ($1.25 million Australian Government; $1.25 million Queensland Government).

Current status
Construction started in September 2024 and is being delivered progressively by local road crews from Boulia Shire Council. Completion is expected mid-2025.
In addition to the delivery of this package of safety improvements, the department has completed a $180,000 planning project to identify future locations of additional widening and overtaking opportunities on this road to ensure readiness as funding becomes available.
