Action 3.8, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021
Status: Complete

In 2020, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) surveyed stakeholders, subject matter experts, industry and community groups to assess the training required by practitioners to deliver high quality walking environments. This survey identified training needs and informed the development of a new course to address current training gaps.

Achievements

The provision of infrastructure for people walking is a specialised area. TMR was concerned about a lack of comprehensive training options for people working in transport planning, design and operations to gain first-hand experience in the field.

To address this concern, the department surveyed stakeholders, subject matter experts, industry and community groups to identify training needs.

The online survey confirmed that there was a need for technical training to build capability in the industry and to raise awareness of the requirements of people walking.

In response, TMR prepared a pilot Walking Infrastructure Masterclass (see Action Summary 3.7). The content and materials for the training course were developed with significant input gathered using the online survey.
