Action 3.7, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021
Status: Complete

In addition to running the existing Road Planning & Design Technical Training Courses, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) developed and piloted a new training course: the Walking Infrastructure Masterclass. The pilot course included field trips where participants had first-hand experience of travelling with a disability and undertaking walkability audits.

Key achievements

Existing training courses were delivered in March and November 2019, including:

  • RPD418 Designing for Pedestrians and Cyclists – 41 Participants
  • RPD309 Pedestrian and Cycling Provision for Planners and Managers – 12 Participants
  • RPD308 Pedestrian Crossing Facilities & Tactile Ground Surface Indicators – 15 Participants
  • RPD421 Separated Cycle Tracks Masterclass – 24 Participants
  • RPD403 Designing Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges – 10 Participants

However, due to pandemic restrictions and venue limitations, none of the existing courses were held during 2020 or so far in 2021. These courses will be offered again, once restrictions are lifted and there is more certainty for venue booking, participant scheduling and travel availability.

TMR research identified a lack of comprehensive training options for planning, designing and operating walking infrastructure (see Action Summary 3.8).

In response, TMR developed a pilot Walking Infrastructure Masterclass to build capability in the industry and to raise awareness of the requirements of people walking. An online survey of stakeholders guided and informed the development of course content and materials.

The 2 day pilot, held in June 2021, was attended by 40 invited participants from TMR, other state government agencies, local government, community groups, industry, academia and consultants. These participants from around the state brought a range of diverse experience to the pilot. They provided feedback on all elements of the masterclass including suitability of content, structure, field trip locations and logistics.

Next steps

The Walking Infrastructure Masterclass will be refined in light of pilot participant feedback and delivered across the state as required. The delivery of the training will be integrated into 'business as usual' for the TMR Engineering & Technology Technical Training Program.
