Walkerston Bypass

A new 10.4 km link between the Peak Downs Highway and the southern end of Mackay Ring Road around Walkerston will offer a safer and more efficient link for the northern Bowen Basin to Mackay and, in particular, the industrial area of Paget.

The Walkerston Bypass corridor follows Stockroute Road from the Mackay Ring Road, deviating south at the western end, before joining the Peak Downs Highway west of Walkerston near Greenmount. The new road connection will connect the Peak Downs Highway to the Bruce Highway 4km south-west of the current connection at the City Gates.

Expected completion is early 2023.

The Walkerston Bypass will deliver safety and transport network benefits by:

  • re-directing heavy vehicles away from local schools, retail and medical facilities in Walkerston
  • extending the life of a 74 year old bridge, adjacent to a school yard
  • removing heavy vehicle and local traffic interactions through Walkerston
  • decreasing congestion through Walkerston
  • integrating with existing works on the Peak Downs Highway–Eton Range Upgrade and Mackay Ring Road (Stage 1)
  • providing a direct route for large loads required by Bowen Basin coal producers
  • producing a new flood-free crossing of Bakers Creek
  • improved safety for traffic travelling between Mackay and the Bowen Basin.

$150 million project, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments (Australian Government $120 million, Queensland Government $30 million).

Central Region - Mackay Whitsunday District

Project info

The $150 million project will connect the existing Peak Downs Highway west of Walkerston directly to the Mackay Ring Road near Paget with a new 2 lane rural highway. The works will divert the current heavy vehicle route away from Walkerston.

The project includes a 1.5km section of 4 lane carriageway for overtaking purposes, a new bridge over Bakers Creek and 2 road overpasses above the local cane railway network.

The Walkerston Bypass will be the designated heavy vehicle route for B-double and other multi-combination vehicles, including A-double road trains, between the Bruce Highway and the Peak Downs Highway.

Design and planning for the project is well advanced.

Construction of the Walkerston Bypass is scheduled to commence in late 2020 upon the completion of Stage 1 of the Mackay Ring Road.
