Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade
Planning is progressing to improve access and create a sense of arrival to North Stradbroke Island by upgrading the ferry terminal at Junner Street, Dunwich.
Under the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal, the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and Council of Mayors (SEQ) committed to upgrade the ferry terminal at Junner Street, Dunwich. The upgraded infrastructure and services will improve connectivity and promote tourism to the island.
The Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade project is investigating ways to improve how the ferry terminal is used, experienced and integrated with the surrounding area. This will include improvements to landscaping and the safety, accessibility, legibility and efficiency of the ferry terminal.
Proposed concept design
A concept design was developed to present a vision for a safer, more accessible and better-connected Dunwich Ferry Terminal. This provided an opportunity for stakeholders and the community to review and comment on proposed improvements before the design is refined as part of the Business Case.
The concept design proposed a modernised transport hub that improved ferry operations, passenger facilities, and connections between ferries, buses, private vehicles and people walking, cycling and using other mobility devices.
It aimed to balance the operational needs of the ferry terminal with improved safety, public space, parking, foreshore access, coastal habitat restoration and recognition of heritage values.
Key features of the proposed concept design included:
- a new dual-berth passenger ferry pontoon
- safer pedestrian links
- on-site parking and kiss ‘n’ ride facilities
- sheltered ferry pontoon, gangway, and bus stop
- provision for small commercial and retail outlets
- simplified barge and ferry access
- landscaping and seating
- community open space
- improved vehicle and bus access
All upgrades will be delivered in a way that protects cultural and heritage values.

Funding
The Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade is a commitment funded through the SEQ City Deal. The SEQ City Deal is a partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors (SEQ) that will prove long-lasting benefits to the region.
The Australian Government, Queensland Government and Redland City Council are providing funding toward the upgrade.
Current status
Community consultation on the proposed concept design was undertaken between 28 May and 21 June 2026. All feedback received during community consultation has been carefully considered and will help inform refinement of the design to be included in the Business Case, which is expected to be completed in late 2026.
