The railyards have been an important part of the Rockhampton community for more than 100 years. Recent rail operations across Central Queensland have changed the need for the railyards.
The Queensland Government purchased the Rockhampton Railyards in 2022 with a plan to repurpose the site and bring it back to life.
This rejuvenation will create jobs in Central Queensland, support the region's manufacturing and maintenance industries, and preserve the rich history of the site.

The project is funded by the Queensland Government with an investment of $23.7million over the next 4 years (2024-28). This will assist to finalise the Heritage Precinct Master Plan and support ongoing remediation and capital upgrades at the Rockhampton railyards.

Delivery of the Heritage Precinct Master Plan is subject to further funding, planning and heritage works approvals.
We are currently revitalising the railyards by assessing the Heritage and Industrial Precincts in stages to identify the design and remediation work needed to restore the site.
Repairs to six warehouses are complete allowing new tenants to operate on-site.
Detailed planning is underway to transform the heritage listed Roundhouse into a light commercial hub with community and recreational spaces.
