Rockhampton Railyards Rejuvenation, Industrial Precinct
The Industrial Precinct focuses on commercial use and provides opportunities for a broad range of industries including rail, manufacturing and maintenance.
We are undertaking significant remediation work to rejuvenate the old railyards and restore this precinct. The precinct features more than 20 different warehouses and storage sheds, some of which have not been operational for some time and are in disrepair.
We are progressing with investigation, design and remediation works for the precinct, allowing new tenants to be introduced to the site through a staged approach.
A number of warehouses are now leased, with a range of tenants operating from the railyards. As remediation works continue, further tenancies will be secured.
Benefits
- Contributes to economy
- Contributes to regional growth
- Restores damaged infrastructure
Remediation works
We are progressing remediation works across the industrial site, in line with tenancy needs and site priorities.
Technical specialists are engaged to assess the repair works required for each shed, including:
- roofing and structural
- lighting
- plumbing
- electrical
- air conditioning
- fire and safety compliance.
Following this thorough assessment, the technical specialist prepares a design drawing to repair the shed. A qualified trades-person is then engaged to complete the remediation works.
Depending on the condition of the shed these works can be extensive and vary in time.
Current Status
Completed works
- Remediated and repaired 9 buildings (warehouses, storage, office space and amenities) including roofing, lighting, plumbing and electrical.
- Installed new fire safety systems.
- Assessed the condition of all infrastructure assets across the site.
- Restored:
- pedestrian and road access points
- existing gate infrastructure
- traffic management features including line markings and dedicated parking areas.
- Upgraded building and site security by installing CCTV, improving lighting and gate repairs.
- Cleared debris and overgrown vegetation.
- Removed run down demountable buildings and other structures (no historical significance).
Site maintenance
Maintenance of the industrial warehouses and supporting infrastructure is essential. The site has many standard and non-standard utilities that require ongoing investment and maintenance including high voltage electricity, water supply and telecommunications.
We are carrying out site investigations and audits to maintain the existing infrastructure alongside ongoing remediation works.
This work allows us to introduce additional tenants as part of our staged approach.
Current site tenants
The precinct is home to 4 tenants operating from the railyards including:
- Queensland Rail: delivering maintenance and upgrade works to Queensland Rail locomotive fleet within the railyards. Queensland Rail is also collaborating with Central Queensland University Centre for Railway Engineering on research into alternate power sources of locomotives including hydrogen and battery powered systems.
- Occupational Skills Centre Australia: local accredited training provider delivering service qualifications across industries including rail, construction, resources infrastructure and first aid. They are located in the historic Roundhouse.
- Aurizon: national freight rail transport company with maintenance activities within the railyards to support operations.
- 310 Social Hub: not-for-profit association hosting regular dances and community activities in the old Queensland Railways Institute (QRI) clubhouse building.
