Veloway 1 (V1) Cycleway, Birdwood Road cycle bridge and approaches

The Veloway 1 (V1) is a dedicated cycleway running between South Brisbane and Underwood. The V1 Birdwood Road velobridge will improve safety, traffic flow and network connectivity.

Several road crossings on the V1 have been identified as opportunities to improve network connectivity and user safety. The Birdwood Road crossing has been prioritised for design, as the current alignment includes a footpath, bus stop and traffic lights.

Construction of the velobridge will allow bike riders to avoid the footpath and stay on the V1, benefitting cyclists and pedestrians.

Motorists will also benefit from reduced pauses in traffic flow that currently occur when bike riders cross Birdwood Road at the traffic lights.

Benefits

  • Improves safety
  • Improves network efficiency
  • Increases traffic flow
  • Better active transport
  • Improves ride quality

Key features

  • Improve safety by reducing interactions between bicycle riders and motorists on Birdwood Road, and between bicycle riders and pedestrians on the footpath.
  • Improve traffic flow by significantly reducing the number of bicycle riders crossing Birdwood Road at the traffic lights.
