Action 2.10, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021

Status: Complete

The Road Safety Policy (RSP) requires all Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) projects to undertake a safe system assessment. This is creating targeted pedestrian improvements and updates to guidance. A review of the RSP has commenced.

Achievements

TMR's RSP was endorsed in 2018. The policy requires all projects to undertake a safe system assessment, or justify why one is not required. Project managers use the assessment to think specifically about pedestrian exposure through questions about the purpose of the project, vulnerable road users, community concerns, operating speeds and a range of other factors.

Implementation of the policy has led to a review of technical guidelines for single lane roundabouts (also see Action summary 1.11). The updated guidance requires wombat crossings to be installed on all entry and departure points. A wombat crossing prioritises the safety of people walking by providing a raised platform with a marked zebra crossing.

Case studies are being identified and will be published once finalised.

Next steps

The RSP is being reviewed and will be updated if required. The process is expected to take 12 months (commenced October 2021).
