Action 2.9, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021

Status: Ongoing

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is investigating the needs of people walking and riding as part of the Queensland Government's precinct planning at rail level crossings. This will determine how to improve safety and accessibility for all transport users. Learnings about improving walking and bike riding safety and accessibility will be used to inform future projects that include level crossing improvements.

Achievements

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is delivering this action as part of work at numerous locations.

Lindum Station, Brisbane

  • Consultation identified that walking improvements around the Carseldine Station precinct on Beams Road is a high priority.
  • The Queensland Government is working with Brisbane City Council to deliver initial safety upgrades and investigate short-term signalisation options at the Lindum Station level crossing.
  • Other actions include:
    • Delivering Lindum Station accessibility upgrades, including an improved pedestrian overpass with lift access.
    • Investigating potential long-term separation of the road and rail corridor for vehicles and active transport users.

Beams Road, Brisbane

  • Consultation identified that walking improvements around the Carseldine Station precinct on Beams Road is a high priority.
  • Other actions include:
    • Planning to build a road and active transport facilities over the rail line.
    • Planning to provide safer pedestrian crossing facilities at the level crossing at Beams Road to help maintain access across the rail line for all active transport users.
    • Working with Brisbane City Council and Queensland Rail to plan initial safety upgrades around Carseldine Station.

Boundary Road, Brisbane

  • Project includes:
    • Planning to build a road bridge with active transport facilities over the rail line as well as new underpasses to cross Boundary Road.
    • Planning to provide safer and DDA-compliant pedestrian crossing facilities at Boundary Road, Coopers Plains, to improve access for all active transport users.
  • While not fully funded for construction, the department will continue to work with Brisbane City Council and Queensland Rail to progress detailed design for the Boundary Road level crossing removal.

Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (Stage 1)

  • The project is providing a shared path as part of a new road over rail bridge to replace the existing crossing that connects Barrs Road to Steve Irwin Way near Glass House Mountains.
  • The design and construction contract for the Stage 1 main works is expected to be awarded in 2022.

Logan to Gold Coast Faster Rail

  • Community consultation confirmed the importance of maintaining connectivity for walking and cycling even where level crossings will be closed (5 in all). This will be a key piece of feedback for refining the project design.
  • Logan to Gold Coast Faster Rail will continue to incorporate active transport considerations into project design.

Level Crossing Prioritisation Initiative

  • Active transport needs and opportunities will be considered as part of the planning of forthcoming level crossing removal investigations at Banyo and Coorparoo in Brisbane.

New passenger rail lines

  • Planning for new passenger rail lines in metropolitan areas is seeking to avoid the need for at grade road/rail interfaces wherever possible.
  • This may include through delivery of elevated 'on-structure' rail lines in some locations. This has the added benefit of supporting more walkable communities in these locations, through limiting the presence of physical barriers.
  • Current projects include Ipswich to Springfield and the Maroochydore heavy rail extension.
