Gold Coast Transport Plan

The Queensland Government is rolling out a transport plan for the Gold Coast. The plan will help the growing population, get the region ready for Brisbane 2032, and build a legacy.

Projects central to the plan include:

• Gold Coast light rail extension: The network will expand from Gold Coast University Hospital, Southport, to Biggera Waters (Harbour Town). This includes 3 new stations and new trams.
• Southern Gold Coast metro-style services (GC Surfer): A metro-style service running frequently from Robina to Coolangatta via Burleigh Heads and the Gold Coast Airport. It’s backed by improvements at key intersections.
• East-west metro-style services
  • Central Gold Coast metro-style services (GC Surfer): A metro-style service running frequently from Nerang to Broadbeach. It's backed by upgrades to Nerang-Broadbeach Road including road widening, widening Dunlops Canal Bridge and signalising Cocos Crescent.
  • Robina to Miami metro-style service: A metro-style service running frequently from Robina to Miami.
• Hope Island Road bridges duplication: Two new bridges at Jabiru Island to ease congestion and improve safety.
• Broadbeach precinct pedestrian bridges: New bridges will link Broadbeach's top shopping and entertainment areas.

Supporting initiatives include:

• planning for a heavy rail extension to Gold Coast Airport
• increased train service frequencies
• Coomera Connector Stage 2
• upgrades to the Pacific Motorway (M1).

Gold Coast light rail extension

The Gold Coast light rail network is set to expand, with a 3.2km line extension connecting the Gold Coast University Hospital in Southport to the Harbour Town shopping precinct in Biggera Waters. The extension will run along Labrador-Carrara Road (Olsen Avenue) and Hope Island Road (Oxley Drive).

The extension will include 3 new stations:

• Musgrave Avenue to improve access to Southport Sharks Club and the Gold Coast Hockey Centre
• Labrador
• Biggera Waters to improve access to Harbour Town Shopping complex

More light rail vehicles and depot upgrades will help keep services running smoothly.

Construction will be planned to minimise impacts to the local community and maintain access to the Gold Coast University Hospital at all times.

Southern Gold Coast metro-style services (GC Surfer)

The GC Surfer will be a metro-style service running frequently from Robina to Coolangatta via Burleigh Heads and the Gold Coast Airport.

It's backed by priority intersection improvements along the Gold Coast Highway, a new interchange at Gold Coast Airport and a service running west of Burleigh to Varsity Lakes and Robina.

The modern vehicles will combine both space and accessibility, making it easier for more people to travel. 

East-west metro-style services

Central Gold Coast metro-style services (GC Surfer)

A new Central Gold Coast high-frequency, 15-minute, metro-style GC Surfer service will improve access to key sports and entertainment venues on the Gold Coast, including Carrara Stadium (People First Stadium), the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre and the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Travelling along Nerang-Broadbeach Road, the service will provide a fast and efficient public transport option along this critical corridor.

The GC Surfer service will be supported by a new pedestrian overpass between adjacent parking and sports facilities at Carrara, widening sections of Nerang-Broadbeach Road to 6 lanes, widening Dunlops Canal Bridge at Broadbeach and signalising Cocos Crescent intersection.

Robina to Miami metro-style service

A high-frequency, 15-minute, Robina to Miami metro-style service. This service will improve connectivity to Bond University and emerging destinations in Miami.

Hope Island Road bridges duplication (Jabiru Island)

Two new bridges including the duplication of the 236-metre Coombabah Creek Bridge and the 194-metre flood relief channel bridge.

This includes a new signalised 4-lane intersection providing improved access to Jabiru Island Park and boat ramp facilities, an off-road shared path on the new bridges and upgraded street lighting and navigational lighting.

Broadbeach precinct pedestrian bridges

New pedestrian bridges creating connections within the Broadbeach entertainment and shopping area including the Gold Coast Convention Centre, casino, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and Gold Coast Light Rail.

Building a new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Little Tallebudgera Creek on Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach.
