Kuranda Range Road cyclone reconstruction works
Reconstruction works are underway at locations on Kuranda Range Road damaged during Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
After the disaster, emergency works were completed to stabilise damaged slopes and ensure the safety and accessibility of Kuranda Range Road.
Assessments have identified over 30 landslips requiring critical upslope and downslope reconstruction. Works include geotechnical solutions like soil nailing, geomesh installation, gabion baskets, as well as reshaping embankments, clearing table drains, and removing loose materials.
In the 12 months following the emergency works, we conducted surveys, geotechnical inspections, planning, detailed designs, and engaged contractors through tenders and contract awards for complex works.
While we are developing a delivery strategy to minimise disruptions to motorists as much as possible, the scale of the reconstruction program will require traffic delays and temporary changed traffic conditions including night closures (with let-throughs, where possible) to keep everyone safe at work sites.
We aim to complete all works by mid-2026, site and weather conditions permitting.
The department is working on about 1100 projects to restore roads across Queensland damaged by floods and bushfires. The department is also reconnecting communities and supporting regional economic recovery after disaster events damaged the state-controlled road network in 2020–25.
The department is moving into the reconstruction phase of the Tropical Cyclone Jasper recovery. This event in December 2023 caused severe damage to the state-controlled road network due to record rainfall.
