Cease operating or cancellation of your Approved Inspection Station

Cease operating an Approved Inspection Station

As an Approved Inspection Station (AIS) approval holder, you may decide to cease operating as an AIS. For example, you may decide to:

  • not renew your AIS approval and let it expire
  • surrender your AIS approval during a current approval period
  • sell your AIS business.

If any of the above events happen, you must return the following items to your nearest transport and motoring service centre, compliance office, or the AIS Administrator within 14 days of the event:

  • all unused inspection certificate books and inspection reports
  • all completed inspection certificates and inspection reports up to 2 years old
  • all cancelled inspection certificates up to 2 years old.

You must also provide written notice to the AIS Administrator, within 14 days of the event, advising:

  • that you have ceased or wish to cease operating as an AIS
  • the date you will cease or have ceased operating as an AIS
  • the book number of any inspection books that you purchased and returned to the Department of Transport and Main Roads
  • the location where the inspection books were returned. For example, "hand delivered to McGregor Transport and Motoring Service Centre", "posted to Logan Compliance Office", or "posted to the AIS Administrator".

Cancellation of an AIS

An AIS approval is immediately cancelled if the AIS approval holder is:

  • an individual and the individual is deceased
  • an individual and the individual becomes insolvent under administration
  • a company and the company is being wound up.

If any of the above events happen, the AIS Administrator may require the return of all:

  • unused inspection certificates and inspection reports
  • completed inspection certificates and inspection reports up to 2 years old
  • cancelled inspection certificates up to 2 years old.

If the AIS Administrator requires the return of the above items, a written notice will be given to a responsible person requiring the return of items in their possession.

A responsible person includes:

  • the AIS approval holder
  • for a deceased estate, the person’s personal representative
  • for a corporation being wound up, the liquidator of the company appointed under the Australian Corporations Act 2001.
