Approved inspection station training

TMR has introduced mandatory training as a proactive and preventative approach to road safety and to ensure that new applicants and existing AIS scheme members are trained to a consistent high standard appropriate for their roles and responsibilities under the scheme.

The aim of the mandatory training is to uplift the standard of vehicle inspections through increased compliance with AIS scheme requirements and, by doing so, contribute to reducing the road safety risk associated with defective vehicles being used on Queensland roads.

The training covers:

  • accreditation and approval conditions
  • fixed AIS and mobile AIS operating requirements
  • conducting vehicle inspections in accordance with the relevant vehicle inspection manual and vehicle standards instructions
  • inspection certificate requirements, including Inspection Certificates Online.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites to complete the training and assessment.

Training structure

The training will be self-paced and delivered online by TAFE Queensland.

Each module only needs to be completed once.

The AIS training is designed specifically for the Queensland AIS scheme and is not recognised for any other purpose.

AIS core module

All new applicants and existing AIS scheme members must complete the AIS core module. This module will include:

  • an overview of the AIS scheme, roles within the scheme, eligibility and suitability requirements
  • legislation relevant to the AIS scheme
  • statutory conditions and key documents
  • legislative responsibilities and operational requirements for each role within the AIS scheme
  • compliance audits and enforcement actions
  • understanding and using the Inspection Certificates Online

It is estimated that the AIS core module should take approximately 2–3 hours to complete.

Inspection modules

In addition to the AIS Core Module, new applicants and existing approved examiners must complete the inspection modules for the inspection types they are accredited for or intend to apply for. The inspection modules are:

  • Approved examiner light vehicle inspection module (LV/CL inspection types)
  • Approved examiner motorcycle inspection module (MC/CM inspection types)
  • Approved examiner light trailer inspection module (LT inspection type)
  • Approved examiner heavy vehicle inspection module (HV inspection type)
  • Approved examiner heavy trailer inspection module (HT inspection type).

Each module will include:

  • an overview of the relevant inspection manual
  • the purpose of the vehicle safety inspection being conducted
  • an overview of the Australian Design Rules and vehicle modifications
  • properly identifying the vehicle
  • conducting the inspection and reasons for rejection.

Each inspection module should take approximately 1–2 hours to complete.
