Capturing travel time data along key cycling corridors

Travel time data can help people make informed decisions about choosing bike riding over other transport modes.

Overview

Action 2.12: Calculate and compare travel time to key centres by different methods of travel to inform bike riding encouragement initiatives.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Being finalised

Achievements

Travel time is a key factor used by Queensland residents when deciding their mode of travel. Previous research has suggested that cycling travel times are comparable to other modes over distances of up to 5km.

Information about verified travel times can be a powerful mechanism to encourage the uptake of bike riding at locations where it is faster to travel by bicycle than drive or catch public transport.

In 2022, we collected data on the travel speed of bicycle riders and analysed how this varies on different infrastructure types.

In 2023, we will capture data on the travel time of bicycle riders and other modes of travel on two of Brisbane's key cycling corridors, the Centenary Cycleway and Veloway 1.

Next steps

We will analyse the data collected and use this information to inform future initiatives to encourage people to travel by bicycle.

We will also use the information to help validate transport models and datasets that use bicycle travel time data.
