Government-wide efforts to get more people riding bikes

3 people stand looking at a poster with a number of sticky notes on it placed under the headings "existing actions" and "ideas for action".
Consultation for Queensland's response to the National Obesity Strategy included exploring priority actions around active transport and recreation.

Overview

Action 2.8: Regularly share information and support collaboration across Queensland Government to get more people riding, walking and physically active.

Lead agency: Health and Wellbeing Queensland

Status: Complete

Achievements

We coordinated an Inter-departmental Physical Activity Group that meets quarterly to collaborate and share information across Queensland Government, including specific discussions about the Queensland Cycling Strategy 2017–2027.

We partnered with Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport on ActiveKIT (Knowledge, Information and Technology), encouraging innovation and resilience in the active industry to get more Queenslanders moving. In 2021, we co-invested $1 million towards Round 1, funding 39 projects. We contributed $500,000 towards ActiveKIT Round 2, funding 25 innovative projects to encourage physical activity.

We are responsible for the state's response to the National Obesity Strategy 2022–2032, in which bike riding is a priority strategy for active transport and recreation. We consulted nearly 1300 people about how to get Queenslanders physically active to inform the development of Queensland's response to the National Obesity Strategy.

Next steps

We will continue to:

  • hold meetings across Queensland Government to collaborate and share information
  • support ActiveKIT grants and be an active member of the Working Group
  • lead development of Queensland's response to the National Obesity Strategy
  • collaborate with government on ways to get more people active.
