Through the She Rides program, women are supported to be part of a social riding community.

Overview

Action 2.5: Support Queensland-based state level sport and active recreation organisations such as peak sport cycling bodies through Active Industry grants to deliver state-wide

Lead agency: Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport

Status: Complete

Achievements

From July 2021 to June 2022, we funded AusCycling a total of $361,965 under two industry funding programs, to deliver physical activity participation and capability improvement initiatives. Initiatives included:

  • She Rides — an introductory riding program focused on fitness, skills development and creating a social riding community of women. The goal is to increase women's confidence and skills on a bike so they can make riding part of everyday life. Accredited AusCycling female coaches led 63 women through the program, and the program has continued to grow post-funding
  • a bike library at Noosaville Public School, with 100 bikes donated. The Noosa Men's Shed supports this program undertaking bike maintenance and delivering workshops to equip students with skills to maintain their bikes. The program has been a success and bikes are regularly used by students, so cycling is the norm at school.
  • audits on a range of cycling facilities in Queensland, including a detailed case study about the design and universal access factors at Anna Meares Velodrome. These results are being integrated into AusCycling's new Geographical Information System which will inform the development of a 10-year infrastructure strategy.

Next steps

We continue to support AusCycling through current funding agreements to deliver initiatives including a 'Come and Try' series for para-athletes, working with Paralympics Australia to address barriers to participation and to increase the capacity of cycling clubs to engage with para-athletes.

Building on the success of the Noosa Bike Library, more schools will be activated under the Bikes for Schools program and bike education will be delivered in schools via a digital solution.
