Workshops equip children with safe riding skills

A child, and adult and a teenager ride bikes on a path next to an outer-city road. All 3 wear helmets and the child and adult wear gloves.
Understanding safe bike riding practices and equipment allows for a fun family bike trip.

Overview

Action 2.1: Support education projects through Community Road Safety Grants to teach children about road safety, bike riding skills and safety equipment, and how to safely navigate where they ride.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

From January 2020 through to December 2022, we awarded more than $432,000 to 51 community organisations through the Community Road Safety Grants scheme to deliver educational workshops to children on the importance of road safety when riding their bicycle.

The workshops taught children essential bike riding skills, the importance of wearing safety equipment when riding and how to safely navigate where they ride. These skills gave the children confidence to ride their bicycle safely and encourages the take-up of active transport in local communities.

Next steps

The Community Road Safety Grants scheme will continue to offer one-off grant funding rounds in 2023 and beyond to provide funding opportunities to community organisations to deliver bicycle road safety education activities within their local communities.
