SEQ Level Crossing Program
We are prioritising the upgrade of 14 level crossings under the south east Queensland (SEQ) level crossing upgrade program.
The SEQ Level Crossing Program outlines the Queensland Government's approach to upgrading level crossings across the south-east.
This program approach is part of a long-term strategy for upgrading and removing SEQ level crossings to improve the performance, safety and resilience of the transport network for all users.
The program includes the following key features:
- 14 level crossings are being prioritised for upgrade under the SEQ level crossing program
- getting ready for Cross River Rail and Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail by upgrading critical level crossings
- delivering upgrades that create great places with good urban amenity and accessibility to improve liveability
- no new level crossings on future passenger rail lines
- integrating innovative responses and learnings
- adopting a program approach by staging and packaging level crossing upgrades to maximise value for money.
The SEQ Level Crossing program supports the objectives of the Queensland Level Crossing Safety Strategy, which sets out a roadmap for how we will meet the challenge involved in improving level crossing safety across Queensland.
Upgrading level crossings can present opportunities to deliver better connected communities and improved housing outcomes. Upgrade solutions can range from installation of improved safety infrastructure, through to separating road and rail, or closure.
Current high priority level crossing projects
Level crossing removals are also planned at Kuraby, Woodridge, Bethania, Holmview and Beenleigh as part of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, jointly funded with the Australian Government.
Planning has also progressed to investigate safety and congestion improvements for the Banyo level crossing precinct. Further funding is also committed for level crossings at Coorparoo.
Next Steps: SEQ level crossing prioritisation planning
Following the release of the SEQ City Deal in 2022, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has commenced working with the Council of Mayors (SEQ), Queensland Rail and the Australian Government to deliver an SEQ level crossing prioritisation project.
This SEQ City Deal project will be the next key step for all governments to work together to identify and plan for future level crossing upgrades.
Looking to the future, the Queensland Government believes the development of a jointly funded SEQ level crossing program with contributions from all levels of government, would ensure ongoing investment to improve all level crossings.
