  • design and construction of cycling and supporting infrastructure
  • delivery of long links with targeted promotion to boost cycling participation
  • planning to develop a pipeline of high-priority projects.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We committed over $41 million in funding for grants to local governments across 2017-19 to support the delivery of the principal cycle network on local government-controlled facilities.

$36 million of this commitment was allocated to 97 projects across the state that will deliver of 69km of network on priority routes including more than 40km in regional Queensland.

Projects funded include the:

  • Caboolture to Wamuran rail trail
  • Mooloolaba to Minyama (Mayes Canal) Bridge
  • Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway
  • Thursday Island shared paths
  • Argyle Park Road shared path in the Whitsundays.

Investing in and promoting new bike riding infrastructure in regional areas across the state makes it safer and easier for more Queenslanders to hop on their bikes for a healthier lifestyle.

The projects supported  across 2017-19 complement the $55 million commitment by the Queensland Government towards high priority infrastructure on state-controlled portions of the principal cycle network (see Action 1.4).

Funding remaining out of the $41 million commitment has been rolled over and will be made available for future projects.

Next steps

Over the next 2 years, we will continue to deliver and invest in high priority infrastructure projects on our principal cycle network.
