New guidance for electric bicycle charging stations

Overview

Action 1.19: Trial providing charging infrastructure for electric bicycles at select state government buildings and publish findings.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Being finalised

Achievements

Electric bikes (e-Bikes) are becoming increasingly popular as a mode of transport. They offer an alternative for people who would otherwise choose driving over riding a regular bicycle, especially for longer distances or hilly terrain.

In the future, people will enjoy a more convenient commute on their e-Bike with new research and a guide to help workplaces introduce e-Bike charging methods.

We partnered with Queensland University of Technology to research e-Bike charging methods and case studies, and develop a guide for workplaces.

As it was not possible or necessary to install specialised charging infrastructure in the privately owned buildings occupied by the department, we instead researched and developed the guide to support workplaces that need to implement e-Bike charging to do so with the most up-to-date guidance about what’s required and the benefits.

Next steps

We will publish the guide and promote it to employers to encourage and support e-Bike charging methods.
