Delivering for cycling on the state transport network

Overview

Action 1.4: Invest $40 million through the Cycling Infrastructure Program to accelerate delivery of the highest-priority routes on the state-controlled portions of the principal cycle network, including projects for:

  • design and construction of cycling and supporting infrastructure
  • development of a pipeline of high-priority projects.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We committed over $55 million in funding across 2017-19 to support the delivery of the principal cycle network on state government-controlled facilities.

$45 million of this commitment delivered over 19km of new network on priority routes across the state and supported projects currently underway that will contribute to the delivery of an additional 28.6km across the state when complete.

Major projects completed include:

  • Veloway 1 Stage D in Brisbane
  • Scrubby Creek Bridge in Logan
  • 2 bridges at Lake Intrepid on the Gold Coast
  • on-road bike lanes along David Low Way on the Sunshine Coast
  • Scotland Street and Takalvan Street shared paths in Bundaberg.

These projects complement the $36 million allocated by the Queensland Government towards new infrastructure projects on local government-controlled portions of the principal cycle network (see Action 1.3).

The remaining $10 million funding commitment is allocated to the projects currently underway including Veloway 1 Stage E and North Brisbane Bikeway Stages 2–3 in Brisbane, New England Highway facilities in Toowoomba, and Douglas-Garbutt Road cycle facilities in Townsville.

Next steps

Over the next 2 years, we will continue to deliver and invest in high priority infrastructure projects on the principal cycle network.
