Achievements

New guidance on ways to design and retrofit bikeways and priority crossings is making bicycle riding in Queensland safer and more appealing.

We have developed a series of new technical publications and other guidance to help designers, planners and engineers plan for and design cycling infrastructure. The guidance covers:

  • cost-effective pedestrian and bicycle bridges
  • priority crossings of shared pathways
  • fencing and barriers on shared paths
  • as well as design of dedicated bicycle paths and lanes.

We have also developed guidance for installing bicycle advisory lanes and cycle streets in low-speed and low-traffic streets where separate facilities are not warranted.

When publishing the guidance, we received positive feedback from industry who recognise the importance of having Queensland Government endorsement of new treatments and consistency in cycling infrastructure design across the state.

Next steps

More best-practice guides and technical publications will be developed over the next 2 years including for bicycle/pedestrian underpasses of major roads, and safety at driveways.
