New plans to boost cycling across Queensland

Achievements

We are expanding the principal cycle network planning across the state as part of the Queensland Cycling Strategy 2017-2027.

Identifying principal cycle routes in local government areas helps to understand the most important routes and missing links for bicycle riding and to prioritise investment in connecting paths and other infrastructure.

In 2018, we developed a plan for principal cycle routes in central west Queensland and the Central West Network Maps are now available following endorsement by Barcaldine, Longreach, Winton, Blackall-Tambo and Boulia Councils.

There are now more than 10,400km of principal cycle network identified throughout Queensland covering more than 99% of the state’s population.

Next steps

We will expand planning for the principal cycle network in collaboration with local governments for communities in north west Queensland. In 2020, we will commence review of the existing Principal Cycle Network Plans, now covering 53 local government areas.
