New guidance for integrating cycling and public transport

Overview

Action 1.21: Review the Public Transport Infrastructure Manual and other relevant documentation to improve policy, guidance, and practice for integrating cycling and public transport.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We undertook a review of the Public Transport Infrastructure Manual and other documents to provide improved guidance on how to integrate cycling infrastructure with public transport infrastructure.

The manual provides important advice to developers of public transport facilities to ensure infrastructure is well planned, safe, and user friendly. We engaged extensively with local governments, experts and stakeholders to identify gaps and deficiencies in the manual in effectively combining cycling and public transport infrastructure.

Updates include ways to integrate bicycle riding facilities in the public transport network to remove conflicts between bicycle riders and public transport vehicles and passengers.

Using graphics and sketches, the practical guidance developed will help designers to separate bicycle riders from people walking at access points to bus stops, train stations and ferry terminals, and to safely separate bicycles and buses through bus stops.

Improved designs for separated cycle tracks at bus stops are a key contribution of the project. New design approaches for bicycle lanes at rail level crossings have also been produced.

As these designs are used in new infrastructure progressively over time, people riding bicycles will enjoy more seamless connections to public transport and safer interactions with public transport vehicles and passengers.

This guidance is an important step to assist people to walk and ride bicycles more often to public transport and develop safe and seamless connections to public transport. Ultimately this will help to reduce peak hour congestion.

Next steps

We will publicise the new guidance and continue to develop additional planning guidance to improve walk up/ride up access to public transport stations and stops.
