State planning instruments updated to include cycling in decision making

Overview

Action 1.25: Support updates to state planning instruments to ensure provision of cycling infrastructure is considered during planning and development decision making processes, such as the making and amending of regional plans and local government planning schemes.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

Ensuring that bicycle riding is featured within state planning instruments helps make sure needs of bicycle riders are considered in land use and transport planning.

We worked with the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning to include the Principal Cycle Network Plans in the State Planning Policy Interactive Mapping System.

Inclusion in the Interactive Mapping System identifies the Principal Cycle Network Plans as matters of state interest and prompts state and local governments to consider the needs of bicycle riders during planning and development decision making.

Next steps

We will continue to promote incorporation of Principal Cycle Network Plans in regional and local land use and transport planning to ensure needs of bicycle riders are considered.
