Principal Cycle Network expanded to north-west Queensland

Overview
Action 1.1: Publish principal cycle network maps for local governments in north-west Queensland to guide delivery of the transport network.
Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads
Status: Complete
Achievements
We worked with councils in north-west Queensland to expand the principal cycle network to include the following 8 local government areas:
- Burke
- Carpentaria
- Cloncurry
- Doomadgee
- Flinders
- McKinlay
- Mornington
- Richmond.
Working with the councils, we identified and mapped principal, future principal and tourism routes for these areas.
We published the North Queensland Principal Cycle Network Plan and Addendum Priority Route Maps on our website in October 2021 and supported councils to prepare delivery action plans to guide the delivery of the active transport network in their region.
As a result of the expansion, 61 local government areas now have a Principal Cycle Network Plan to help future planning and investment in Queensland's transport network.
Next steps
We will:
- work with local governments in north-west Queensland to monitor and encourage implementation of the agreed delivery action plans
- monitor regional and local land use and transport planning and infrastructure projects by other agencies on and around the Principal Cycle Network in north-west Queensland.
