Embracing data and technology to improve wayfinding

Mobile devices present opportunities to improve digital journey planning and wayfinding for bike riders.

Overview

Action 1.20: Explore opportunities with the private sector to improve smartphone-based wayfinding for Queensland's cycling and walking networks.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

Through our exploratory activities, we found we could potentially improve wayfinding for bike riding through the Translink Journey Planner once the rollout of the Smart Ticketing project is complete.

While the rollout of Smart Ticketing continues, we are collaborating with the Victoria Department of Transport on a nationwide project to determine how the active transport data governments hold can be made widely available to the private sector so they can develop better smartphone-based wayfinding products.

Next steps

We will monitor delivery of the Smart Ticketing project and look at future opportunities to improve wayfinding through the Translink Journey Planner.

At a national level, we will work with Victoria Department of Transport to test and implement new active transport data standards to help make a range of data sources available to the private sector.
