Active transport infrastructure rolled out in Priority Development

A bike path adjacent to a walking path and a road.
Separated cycle tracks provide safe and comfortable journeys for bike riders and people walking.

Overview

Action 1.11: Implement the Selection and design of cycle tracks guideline, in the planning, detailed design and delivery of Priority Development Areas such as:

  • Caloundra South
  • Greater Flagstone
  • Northshore Hamilton
  • Bowen Hills
  • Ripley

Lead agency: Economic Development Queensland

Status: Long-term

Achievements

We carried out engineering assessments for several precinct-level planning schemes. This included the larger Caloundra South, Greater Flagstone and Yarrabilba Priority Development Areas.

The Caloundra South Priority Development Area included significant investment in off-road bikeways and shared bicycle/pedestrian pathways and crossings. It is a significant example of how implementing the Selection and design of cycle tracks guideline delivers positive outcomes for active transport users and local communities.

Despite some challenges created by restricting infrastructure framing the smaller Priority Development Areas of Bowen Hills and Northshore Hamilton, we retained a focus on applying best practice principles for connectivity and end-of-trip facilities. This included implementing 2 fully protected signalised intersections at Northshore Hamilton.

Next steps

The Caloundra South, Greater Flagstone, Northshore Hamilton, Bowen Hills and Ripley Priority Development Areas expect a further 5 to 30 years of additional development. This means quality cycling infrastructure will continue to be delivered for many years as development progresses.
