Achievements

We reviewed how bicycle parking is being provided and used at schools in Queensland. This included:

  • researching national and international guidance and case studies on school bicycle, scooter and skateboard parking
  • asking school principals, parents/carers and staff about their opinions on bicycle parking at their schools, via an online survey
  • interviewing people involved in planning and designing bicycle parking facilities at schools.

This research gave us a better understanding of how students across Queensland are travelling to school, and the types of parking facilities needed to encourage more children to ride to school.

Based on our findings, we created new guidelines for bicycle, scooter and skateboard parking facilities in new and upgraded schools. The guidelines set clear expectations for practitioners when designing and locating facilities, including how to calculate the number of parking spaces needed.

This new guidance will help:

  • ensure better value for money and efficient use of space on school grounds
  • improve bicycle and scooter parking facilities at Queensland schools
  • help younger generations shift towards more active modes of transport.

Next steps

We will promote the new guidelines to practitioners involved in planning, designing and delivering new and upgraded schools. We will also continue to review plans for new and upgraded schools and monitor how the guidance is implemented.
