New technical guidance to improve bike rider safety

3 people riding bikes on a shared path. The path has concrete walls.
New guidelines encourage best practice design of bike rider and pedestrian underpasses.

Overview

Action 1.15: Publish new technical guidance, including for grade separated crossings of major roads and treatments to improve safety at driveways for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We developed and published 2 new technical guidelines to improve pedestrian and bike rider safety:

  1. Treatment options to improve safety of pedestrians, bicycle riders and other path users at driveways gives guidance for treating motor vehicle and path user conflicts at driveways. The guideline can be used to assess risk at existing sites and where a new access driveway or active transport infrastructure is proposed.
  2. Bicycle rider and pedestrian underpasses gives best practice information on key points to consider when designing underpasses to provide a safe and appropriate crossing facility for people walking and riding bicycles.

Next steps

We will promote the new guidelines to practitioners involved in planning and designing cycling infrastructure.
