New guidelines for best practice design of transit-oriented developments will help encourage more bike riding and walking.

Overview

Action 1.16: Develop and publish a best practice guideline to support an exceptional bicycle riding and walking experience in TMR-led transit-oriented developments.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Being finalised

Achievements

We commenced work developing guidance for planning, designing and implementing exceptional bicycle riding and walking experiences for future developments, particularly those centred around major public transport nodes (also known as transit-oriented developments).

Our work has involved:

  • a review of international and national best practice and case studies to identify key active transport principles and needs
  • speaking with stakeholders, including Queensland Rail and developers, to understand current methods, challenges and opportunities when incorporating active transport infrastructure in transit-oriented developments
  • collaborating with local government to identify the requirements for best practice, sustainable transport outcomes.

The guideline will include tools and checklists to provide planners and designers with clear, easy to follow guidance about how to make walking and riding more enjoyable, safe and convenient in future transit-oriented developments.

Next steps

We will complete and publicise the new guidance in 2023 to improve outcomes for people walking and riding in future developments.
