Improved Cycling Infrastructure Policy monitoring and reporting

The TMR Cycling Infrastructure Policy helps deliver new and upgraded cycling infrastructure on Queensland roads, such as this active transport bridge at Sippy Downs.

Overview

Action 1.28: Implement formal processes to monitor and report on implementation of the TMR Cycling Infrastructure Policy and provide training for staff.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We engaged with our employees involved in the planning, design and construction of transport projects to identify barriers and challenges to implementing the Cycling Infrastructure Policy. We asked them how monitoring, reporting and training could be improved.

Through this engagement, we established and implemented a process to capture and report cycling infrastructure delivered through the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP). The new process captures data for infrastructure delivered as a result of the policy and through standalone active transport projects.

We also put an annual process in place to forecast the length of cycling infrastructure to be delivered through projects in the next 4-year QTRIP. For example, for projects worth over $50 million we estimate the Cycling Infrastructure Policywill result in more than 150km of new or upgraded cycling infrastructure between 2022–2023 and 2025–2026.

We also identified that a more comprehensive Cycling Infrastructure Policy online training course and supporting resources would support our employees to more effectively and consistently interpret and apply the policy.

Next steps

We will use the employee consultation feedback to identify and develop improved Cycling Infrastructure Policy staff training content as we finalise and roll out the new TMR Active Transport Infrastructure Policy currently in development (refer to Action 1.27).
