Showcasing effective active transport community engagement

Side-by-side of a Facebook post from Townsville City Council and a sign in a park, both saying: ‘Have your say on the Future Cycle Network Upgrade’.
Townsville residents were invited the have their say on a future cycle network upgrade.

Overview

Action 1.10: Develop and publish case studies of stakeholder consultation undertaken for projects funded by the Active Transport Investment Program.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We worked with Townsville City Council to develop and publish a case study about community consultation undertaken for the Cape Pallarenda Road Future Cycle Network Upgrade project.

The case study discusses how Townsville City Council used innovative, fit-for-purpose stakeholder engagement and community consultation strategies and techniques to get early, valuable input from bicycle riding stakeholders and the broader community.

Key stakeholder groups appreciated being involved early in the planning. The overwhelming response to the online consultation provided the project team a much greater appreciation of key issues along the link.

The stakeholder and community insights gained will assist the council to develop the best infrastructure solution which aligns with both project objectives and community needs and expectations, while also helping prevent the need for potential future re-work during later project stages.

The early engagement approach also created a good foundation for the project team to continue to have open and robust discussions with stakeholders throughout future project stages.

Next steps

We will look for opportunities to promote best practice stakeholder consultation for active transport projects funded by the Active Transport Investment Program.
