Showcasing innovative fit for purpose cycling infrastructure

The Sumners Road Interchange upgrade included purpose-built active transport infrastructure to encourage more riding and walking.

Overview

Action 1.18: Develop and publish case studies of projects delivered by the Queensland Government that demonstrate innovative, cost effective and fit-for-purpose delivery of cycling infrastructure.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We developed and published case studies showing the positive impact of active transport infrastructure. This included our delivered capital works projects and Council-led infrastructure projects funded through the TMR Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. Projects featured include:

  • Samford to Ferny Grove Cycle Link
  • North Brisbane Bikeway
  • Bicentennial Bikeway
  • Barr Creek Bridge
  • Slacks Creek Green Link.

We also published case studies demonstrating how we provide for active transport users in larger transport projects by applying our Cycling Infrastructure Policy. Projects featured include:

  • Smithfield Bypass
  • Vines Creek Bridges replacement
  • Sumners Road Interchange upgrade
  • Bruce Highway upgrade, Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway.

We promoted case studies on our social media channels, boosting awareness of cycling infrastructure funded by the Queensland Government and innovative design treatments used to improve safety and accessibility for active transport users.

Next steps

We will identify opportunities to promote existing case studies and develop new case studies to:

  • support departmental understanding and capability in applying the Cycling Infrastructure Policy in all stages of the project lifecycle
  • raise community and industry awareness of new Queensland Government funded active transport infrastructure projects.
