Creating connections to strengthen cycling outcomes

Brisbane bike riders experience the benefits of collaboration and shared learning between state and local governments.

Overview

Action 1.12: Meet regularly with local governments in South East Queensland to inform future investment in cycling infrastructure and to support working across boundaries.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We delivered this action through 2 major activities:

1. Supporting local advisory groups.

These include:

  • Active Transport Advisory Committees in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, which the Queensland Government jointly established with the respective local government authorities. The committees aim to strengthen relationships and collaboration between local and state governments and with the community. Members include representatives from the community, academic stakeholders representing walking, cycling and people with disability.
  • Gold Coast City Council's Active Transport Reference Group, which includes council officers, officers from our department and other Queensland Government agencies, and representatives from academia and stakeholder peak bodies.
  • Redland City Council's Active Transport Reference Group, which regularly convenes with representatives of local cycling and walking stakeholders and us.

2.  Online workshops our Active Transport Investment Program grants team ran with councils across Queensland about updates to the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. These workshops provided the opportunity for Queensland councils to come together to discuss the program.

Direct engagement between the state and local government elected representatives, staff and local community stakeholders provides opportunities to learn from each other and share ideas to increase the uptake of walking, cycling and other active travel modes across the state.

Next steps

We will continue to work with local governments to inform future investment in cycling infrastructure.
